Our Story

Karl and Bonnie, a couple from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, have been faithfully serving communities in Honduras for over 20 years through their local church. In the early years, they led mission teams into the inner cities, bringing hope, supplies, and hands-on help to some of the country’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

Everything changed the day they received a request from a remote mountain village called Guachipilín. The villagers explained that without a church, they weren’t recognized by the government—which meant no access to basic infrastructure like electricity or clean water.

Moved by the need and feeling led by God, Karl and Bonnie gathered a team of volunteers to raise funds and build the village’s first church. The work was physically demanding, the terrain steep, and resources scarce. But side by side with the people of Guachipilín, they persevered.

Day by day, the structure took shape. When it was finally complete, the impact rippled through the village: electricity and running water followed, along with a renewed sense of dignity and hope.

That church was just the beginning.

Since then, Bonnie, Karl, and an ever-growing circle of family, friends, and supporters have continued the mission—building homes, expanding schools, operating a soup kitchen, and offering medical support. Through UP Friends of Honduras, they remain committed to walking alongside their Honduran brothers and sisters to create lasting, community-led change.
